I went to visit the itsy bitsies this morning. They were both sleeping peacefully with steady numbers in the normal range. Both are off of UV lighting and both are receiving 0.5 cc of Mommy's milk per hour.
The enclosures they each live in provide a controlled, humidified atmosphere for each of them. When the nurses are not checking them, monitoring them, performing procedures, or changing postage-stamp size diapers, the enclosures are covered with fitted quilts so it is dark and insulated so they can well, incubate, and continue to develop.
When I peaked in on Adam this morning, I was surprised to see his back. It was the first time I had seen one of them lying on their side/stomach. When I went to the other side of the enclosure, I lifted the quilt and began talking to him. He was lying there so peacefully and then opened his tiny eyes and looked around for a moment before closing them and settling back in. How can someone that little be that adorable? lol. I know. I am prejudice!
Kylee continues to do very well too. She was sleeping peacefully without a care in the world when I visited her. She has the sweetest little face and long, dainty, tiny fingers.
The tubes on both baby's noses are not ventilators but what they call "bubblers." They help keep their teeny nostrils open and provide oxygenated airflow to help them breathe easier. They have both been near room oxygen (21%), but today Adam's oxygen was increased a little, again, to help him breath easier. All part of a routine day in the life of a preemie.
Mommy and Daddy are exhausted trying to catch up with themselves. They are absolutely amazing the way they have taken on their roles so graciously and how strong they continue to be for Adam and Kylee. They are very proud parents and absolutely beam all the time in spite of their exhaustion. They are off right now to check on Adam and Kylee and say good-night to them.
We want to give a shout out to the Sutter Memorial Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team. They are amazing and perform miracles routinely on a daily basis. They are highly skilled and at the same time highly compassionate and sensitive to the extremely difficult and traumatic experience one has when their children are in critical condition. They continually go out of their way to make things as easy as they can for everyone while taking incredible care of these tiny babies. They are truly rock stars and we thank each of them from the bottom of our hearts!
... and speaking of rock stars, we also want to send a shout out to the Sutter Memorial High Risk Pregnancy team. Wow, what care!!! Everyone made such an effort to make Emily as comfortable and at ease as possible. As dangerous and potentially dire her situation was, they were never anything but optimistic, caring, compassionate, and professional. This team is comprised of highly skilled professionals who give their patients world class treatment, day-in and day-out without hesitation. Thank you to each and every one of the doctors, nurses, aides, housekeepers, and volunteers for the incredible job you do.
Thank each of you reading this for caring about our little miracles and thank you so much for the prayers, love and positive energy being sent to them. Today was a another day to chalk up in the Good column!
